If Your Employer Refuses or Cannot Enter the Safe Room: What Caregivers Should Do
During emergency situations in Israel, sirens may sound to warn people about possible danger. When this happens, everyone must follow the safety instructions given by the Israel Home Front Command. These instructions are meant to protect lives and help people stay safe.
For caregivers, the situation can sometimes be complicated. Many caregivers are responsible for elderly employers who may be sick, weak, confused, or afraid to move to a protected space such as a shelter or safe room (MAMAD). In some cases, an employer may refuse to go to the safe room, or physically cannot move there. When this happens, caregivers may feel unsure about what to do.
First and most important, always try to follow the official safety instructions as much as possible. If a siren sounds, the goal is to bring both you and your employer to a protected space.
Inform the Family Immediately
If your employer refuses or cannot enter the safe room, contact the family members right away. Explain the situation clearly so they understand the risk. Family members may be able to help convince the employer or provide instructions on how to handle the situation safely.
Notify Your Agency
You should also inform your caregiving agency as soon as possible. Agencies can help communicate with the family, suggest solutions, and guide you on what steps to take next.
If There Is No Family
Some elderly employers do not have close family members. In this case, you should contact the agency and the legal guardian responsible for your employer. They may be able to arrange a safer solution or provide instructions on how to manage the situation during emergencies.
Do Not Wait for the Next Siren
If this problem happens once, it is important not to wait until the next siren before asking for help. Emergency situations can happen again at any time. Contact the family, guardian, or agency as soon as possible so they can help create a safer plan for the future.
If You Are Told to Stay Outside the Safe Room
If no proper solution is provided and you are asked to stay outside the safe room with your employer during a siren, you can ask for help from Kav LaOved. This organization helps workers in Israel, including migrant caregivers.
You can contact them at:

They may be able to provide advice, guidance, and support regarding your situation.
Remember: Your Safety Is Important Too
Caregivers do important and compassionate work, especially during stressful times. While caring for your employer is your responsibility, your safety also matters. Following emergency instructions and speaking up when a situation is unsafe helps protect both you and the person you care for.
Staying informed and communicating quickly with families, agencies, and support organizations can help ensure that everyone stays as safe as possible during emergencies.
